  • First Day at Stubby!

Mon 17 Oct 2016 School Reporter

We went down to the beach for a seashore walk in the bright Solent sunshine this afternoon.
After dinner, while playing sharks and barnacles on the field, a very courageous fox walked up to us!

St. Mary's gets to go to the hide tonight, so fingers crossed we get to see the badgers and foxes!

This week the STEAMers asked questions about a classic science experiment, Mentos and Coke-Cola.

Does it matter how much sugar is in the coke-cola?
Does it matter how many Mentos are used?
What happens if you change the shape of the bottle?
What happens if you use a narrow hole in the lid?
Does it matter what the colour of the Mentos is?

After the planning and then the testing we ended up with more questions to investigate. Which we will investigate on the 1st November.

  • St. Mary’s Girls Football Team

Wed 22 Jun 2016 School Reporter

The girls played Peel Common this warm afternoon, coming away with a strong win.

We went to Peel Common with seven girls a mixture of Year 6s and 5s with no subs. This was due to several Year 6s at their transition day. This resulted in the girls having to play both halves of the game in the afternoon heat.
They worked extremely well as a team calling for the ball and using the space available. There were some decisions made by the referee that were certainly questionable. However, due to St. Mary's persistence and team spirit they overcame this. St. Mary's Girls left the game closer as a team, they had really relied on each other throughout it, and as can be seen in the photo had put all their effort into the game! Final score one nil to St. Mary's Girls.

  • St. Mary's Girls play Lee-on-the-Solent

Thu 09 Jun 2016 School Reporter

The girls played Lee-on-the-Solent and came away from the game with seven goals!

This was the girls third game of the season, prior to this they had lost both games. However, in their last game they had played Grange and came away with a respectable one nil defeat. So spirits were high! We had a huddle before the match and using the trusty iPad discussed our positioning. This resulted in the girls holding their positions, passing, defending well, scoring and ultimately enjoying the match!

It was terrific game to watch all 3 strikers scored one goal Laura, Violet and Lucia. The remaining goals were scored by Weronika, who was Girl of the Match.

  • Kwik Cricket Girls tournament @ Privett Park

Wed 08 Jun 2016 School Reporter

The St. Mary's Y6 girls won the tournament at Privett Park today!

Their coach said they won primarily because of their game strategy - to bowl the cricket ball low and short. While batting they took every advantage of taking a quick run while their opponents were taking their time fielding, it also helped that their coach gave them an incentive if they could it to the boundary. After this they were hitting fours and sixes!

  • St. Mary's Girls Football Team played against Grange Jr.

Tue 17 May 2016 School Reporter

St. Mary's headed down to Grange Junior this afternoon. This was Grange's first game of the season (our second). We had a very good turnout for our team having 11 of the girls at the game, with Weronika coaching from the side of the pitch, recovering from an injury. Weronika speaking before the game said "The girls are very positive about today's game and they hope they win".

The team started off very strong, resisting the pressure from Grange who took multiple shots at goal which were taken comfortably by Molly Mc. our super keeper, who is showing great confidence in goal. She was supported by excellent defenders that included Layna, Molly M., Charlie, Lucia and Sophie, who were relentless. Olivia did a very good job defending in midfield and turning many of these into scoring opportunities. Jasmine had a rocky start with her first couple of throw-ins, however with some pitch-side coaching she mastered it by the end of the game. Just before half-time whistle Grange scored a goal from their throw in, because St. Mary's were not marking the other players.

In the second half the subs came on, bringing more energy to the game resulting in more time spent in Grange's half. Unfortunately, the strikers were unable to score because they were not using the space available effectively. We will look at improving this over the next couple of weeks at school. Lara had the best chance of scoring in the match she was 1:1 with the goalie who managed to save it. Weronika said at the end of the match "The girls were proud of the score and that they had a lot of fun." The improvement from last week was excellent to witness, and we really look forward to see what this team can achieve this season.

Next week against Castle, due to Year 6's at Fairthorne, most of the Year 5's will be representing St. Mary's.

    Good Luck!
